Summer in the city was disturbed in the most welcome way by two exceptional visiting bands at The Cluny, Newcastle. One band had only been available during August as all its members were students at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, but the mainly-Scottish Patrick Kunka Quartet amply demonstrated the importance of this opportunity. They echoed the classic early 1960s John Coltrane Quartet, but very much via their own marked individuality. Saxophonist Leah Gough-Cooper breathed fire, pianist Alan Benzie showed an extraordinary commanding fluency, Drummer Kunka provided a continually varying rhythmic thunder and American bassist Dylan Coleman furnished a rock-solid underpinning. A remarkable outfit even for the remarkable current Scottish jazz scene.
